This course is designed to introduce participants to the mathematics-related aspects of music, including overtones, scales, tuning systems, the musical dice games of Mozart and Haydn, the old English style of bell-ringing and other topics involving mathematical ideas from probability theory to group theory.  The only requirements for the course are an interest in and enthusiasm for both Mathematics and Music, as the mathematical and musical concepts are described in an elementary way.

The Course will be run over two consecutive Saturdays, and will be offered in both the first and second semesters – participants might elect which of the two they would rather attend.  

 Mathematics and Music: A Duet

The Course – which is endorsed by South African Council for Educators (SACE) for 15 Professional Development (PD) points – offered by Prof Michael GLENCROSS.  Prof Glencross, BSc, BSc(Hons), BEd, MPhil, DPhil, PGCE, has been involved extensively in education. He has taught mathematics and statistics at high school, college and university, and has supervised postgraduate research students at master’s and doctoral levels. 

Prof Glencross’s areas of interest and expertise are in the fields of mathematics education, statistics education and research methodology and design.  He is a Professor Emeritus of the Walter Sisulu University for Technology & Science.  He is also a keen musician and plays lead trumpet for a Johannesburg swing band.

Having pre-registered, on first morning of the course, please arrive between 8h30 and 9h00 for physical registration – during which time tea and coffee will be provided.  (Tea and coffee will also be provided for the mid-morning and mid-afternoon breaks; participants will make their own lunch arrangements).

At the end of the Course an attendance certificate will be awarded.
